About the Ensemble

Trio SurPlus consists of members of the Ensemble SurPlus. Founded in 1992 in Freiburg, Germany with the goal of interpreting new and unknown composers irrespective of style and intellectual or technical requirements, the Trio SurPlus has given numerous premieres and through its efforts created a repertoire for the unusual instrumentation of oboe, piano, and percussion. Concert series and masterclasses have brought the trio to other European countries as well as Canada and the USA. A CD of their work is available on Edition Zeitklang.

About the Members

Christian Kemper

Christian Kemper was born in 1969 in Düsseldorf and studied oboe with Martin Schie (Folkwang Hochschule Essen/Duisburg), Thomas Indermühle (Musikhochschule Karlsruhe), as well as with Peter Veale at the Darmstadt Summer Courses. In addition to his oboe studies, Kemper completed studies in music theory with Bernd Asmus (Karlsruhe). He is a member of Suono Mobile an initiative for new music in Stuttgart as well as the Freiburg-based Ensemble Chronophonie. Of particular importance for him is his work with the Ensemble Chambre d’écoute, a group he co-founded that in its core instrumentation of oboe, cello, and piano is dedicated to programs that combine old and new chamber music as well as experimental performance concepts. He has travel in numerous European countries, the USA, South Amerika, and Asia as a teacher and interpreter primarily of contemporary music. He teaches music theory at the conservatories in Freiburg and Stuttgart, and is simultaneous a lecturer in this subject at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe.

Eun Ju Kim

Eun Ju Kim was born in Gwangju, South Korea. She studied piano at the Seoul National University and the Musikhochschule Freiburg, Germany. Her activities in concert performance as well as CD and radio recording have brought her before audiences in Korea, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, the Ukraine, and the USA. She has performed at the Berliner Festwochen, Frankfurter Festen, and Ijsbreker in Amsterdam, amongst others.

Olaf Tzschoppe

Olaf Tzschoppe was born in Kiel and studied percussion at the Freiburg Musikhochschule as well as the University of Michigan as a DAAD scholar. His artistic focus is on solo repertoire and chamber music of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as interdisciplinary collaborations with other art forms. He has premiered many works written specifically for him. He is a member of the world-renowned Percussions de Strasbourg which has received numerous prizes and awards. He is also a co-founder of the Ensemble SurPlus and Trio SurPlus. He regularly tours in Europe, Asia, America, and Africa. In addition to solo performances, Tzschoppe performs with MusikFabrik (Cologne), Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), Klangforum Wien (Vienna), among others. He also gives concerts of improvised music. Olaf Tzschoppe is Professor of Percussion at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen and is a lecturer at the Internationalen Meisterkursen.
